Let's get started.
In your first class, you will receive a beautiful sketchbook. This sketchbook will follow you until grade 12 - please handle it with care. Any lost sketchbooks will need to be replaced immediately at the expense of the student.
This sketchbook is yours to log your notes and creative experiences. You may wish to draw, sketch, doodle, paint, colour in it as you wish; just leave space for notes and sketchbook challenges. These sketchbooks will be shared with your peers, teacher, and parents, a reminder to keep content appropriate.
You are not to rip or cut out any pages. This is your learning log. You will be experimenting with different techniques and challenges. All of your rough work and all of the steps that lead to the final expression will be in this book. Art is about expression and making mistakes in order to learn. Honor this process and watch yourself become an artist!
Your term in Art 8 will include 4 major projects: Sketchbook Challenges, Ink Action, Story Quilt, and Monochromatic Painting

Sketchbook Challenges
Sketchbook Challenges in Art 8 will often follow notes in order to see if you've grasped, and can apply the concept we learned in class. These challenges are mandatory and will be marked accordingly. More often than not, we will provide feedback to each other and use peer, self, and teacher assessment.
Challenge #1: Creative Name
On the first page of your sketchbook, write your name across the whole page. Seems easy right? Well... Each letter must be a different symbol or image. Ideally these are images that represent who you are and things you enjoy. Use the following as inspiration, or come up with your own.

Challenge #2: Colour
Notes: In your sketchbook create a colour wheel that includes all the primary colours and secondary colours. If you wish to include more than 6 colours that's fine, just make sure the colours are in the right place (see image).
Vocabulary Primary Colours - colours that cannot be created from other colours. The three primary colours are RED, BLUE, and YELLOW Secondary Colours - colours that are created by mixing the primary colours. Red + Blue = PURPLE, Blue + Yellow = GREEN, Yellow + Red = ORANGE - notice their placement on the wheel. Complimentary Colours - colours that compliment (go well together) each other. They are found directly across from each other on the colour wheel --> (Blue and Orange, Yellow and Purple, Red and Green) Warm Colours - colours that "feel" warmer than others - RED, ORANGE, YELLOW Cold Colours - colours that "feel" colder than others - BLUE, GREEN, PURPLE |
Challenge: Divide a blank page into four squares. Draw the same image in each of the squares.
|
Challenge #3: Line
Challenge #4: Shape
Notes:
Shape - A flat, enclosed area that has two dimensions, length and width. Artist use both geometric and organic shapes. Shapes are 2D. Geometric Shapes - Squares, octagons, rectangles, circles, triangles, pentagon, diamond etc. These shapes are regular and precise. Organic Shapes - splotches, blots, spills, natural shapes that appear in nature. ------------------------------------- Challenge: Divide your sketchbook in half (hamburger style). On the top, create an image using only GEOMETRIC shapes. On the bottom, create an image using only ORGANIC shapes |
Challenge #5: Form
|
Notes:
Form - Objects that are three dimensional having length, width and height. They can be viewed from many sides. Forms take up space and volume. They are considered 3D. Challenge: Watch the following YouTube videos. Your challenge is draw the 3D hand or sphere, or create your own 3D objects. You need to demonstrate that you understand how to create FORM. |
